The advantages of private pay are:
ConfidentialityConfidentiality is assured- no information leaves the office-unlike insurance, where information is shared over the phone, fax and internet.
DiagnosisA mental health disorder diagnosis is not required-unlike insurance, where a mental health disorder has to be listed.
ReimbursementSome insurance may reimburse the client for out of network benefits.
Tax DeductiblePrivate pay is tax deductible.
High Deductible and Co-pay PaymentsIf your insurance has a high deductible and co-pay payments, it may be financially in your favor to private pay your sessions. With private pay, your session fee may be only slightly higher than your co-payment and you won’t have to pay your insurance deductible charges.
For ExampleIf your deductible is $500/yr and your co-pay is $25/session, you would have to pay $160 for the first session and $120/session after that until your deductible is met. You would still be responsible for paying your co-pay even after your deductible is met. However, with private pay, if your household income qualifies you for a rate of $50/session, for the same amount of money you can receive 10 sessions instead of four with insurance. If you need more sessions, you are still only paying $25 more than your co-pay.
